What is a credit card and how does it work?

A credit card lets you borrow money up to a set limit to pay for things. Each month, you’ll get a statement showing what you spent. If you pay the full balance by the statement due date, you won’t be charged interest. If you don’t pay your full statement balance by the due date, interest will apply.

What is a credit limit?

Your credit limit is the maximum amount you can spend with your card. Your credit limit is based on factors like your income and credit history. Staying within your limit can help you build a good credit record.

How do I apply for a credit card?

The Money Mart Mastercard is currently available by invitation only to select Money Mart customers. Eligible customers must apply in-branch for their Money Mart Mastercard.

How long does it take to get approved?

Approval times can vary. Some applications may be approved within minutes, while others may take 7–10 business days if additional verification is required.

Yes. If you believe you’ve been a victim of credit card fraud, please lock your card via the Money Mart App and call us at 1-800-361-1407 right away. We will review the situation and assist you.

What should I do if my card is lost or stolen?

If your card is lost or stolen, log in to the Money Mart App immediately to lock your card. Then call us at 1-800-361-1407 to report the issue to request a replacement card.

Is it safe to use my credit card when purchasing goods or services by phone or online?

Using your credit card online or over the phone can be convenient, but it’s important to stay cautious. Here are a few tips that may help reduce your risk:
  • Only share your credit card number over the phone if you initiated the call and you’re confident about who you’re speaking with.
  • Make online purchases through well-known or trusted retailers, and check that the website shows “https://” to indicate a secure connection.
  • Avoid using public or unsecured Wi-Fi networks when entering payment information

How do I redeem my cash back?

You can redeem the cash back you’ve earned on purchases in the following categories directly through the Money Mart Mobile App:

This means that when you make a purchase in one of these categories, you can apply your available cash back toward that type of transaction in the app.

Does my card come with any insurance benefits?

Yes, purchases made with the Money Mart Mastercard are covered by Purchase Assurance and Extended Warranty.

  • Purchase Assurance provides coverage for eligible items against physical damage or theft for up to 90 days from the date of purchase6
  • Extended Warranty extends the manufacturer’s warranty on eligible items for up to one additional year, matching the terms of the original warranty7

International Usage

Can I use my credit card overseas?

Yes. You can use your card anywhere Mastercard is accepted, including outside of Canada.

Do I need to notify Money Mart before traveling?

It’s recommended that you set up a travel notification in the Money Mart App. This helps reduce the chance that your transactions are flagged as unusual while you’re away.

How do I lock or unlock my card?

You can lock or unlock your card at any time through the Money Mart App or by calling Customer Service at 1-800-361-1407.

Can I add supplementary cards?

No. At this time, supplementary cards, authorized users, and co-applicants are not available.

How do I replace a lost or damaged card?

You can request a replacement card through the Money Mart App or by calling us at 1-800-361-1407.

Credit Score & Reporting

What happens if I only pay the minimum amount?

Paying only the minimum amount will keep your account in good standing, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
  • Interest continues to accrue
  • Your overall balance may increase if you carry it forward from month to month.
  • Your credit score can be affected over time, especially if your balance stays high compared to your credit limit or if you continue to carry debt for long periods.

Disclaimers

1 Mastercard’s merchant category codes (MCCs) are used to determine the category of your purchase. These codes are assigned by merchants and may change from time to time. Categories, rates and program rules may change. Cardholder account must be open and in good standing to be eligible for cash back. Purchase-based cash back is capped at $25 cash back earned per statement cycle.

2 5% cash back on Money Mart service fees applies to eligible MoneyGram, cheque cashing and currency exchange transactions. Cash back is calculated on the actual service fee paid. Cash back is only earned on eligible products or services that are for the primary cardholder’s personal use. For cheque cashing transactions, maximum cash back earned is $6 per cheque.

3 1% cash back on Installment Loan payments is available for up to the equivalent of 12 monthly payments per customer lifetime. Cash back applies only to payments made after card activation and only when both the cardholder account and Installment Loan are in good standing. Cash back is not earned on Installment Loans for customers who reside in BC, Manitoba and Newfoundland.

4 Fee waiver applies only to the standard service fee – one waiver per calendar month. Waiver must be applied at time of transaction and cannot be carried forward or redeemed retroactively. Eligibility requires the cardholder account be in good standing.

5 Fee waiver applies only to the standard service fee – one waiver per calendar month. Applies only to the repurchase of up to $3,000 CAD equivalent of foreign currency- standard fees apply above this amount. Waiver must be applied at time of transaction and cannot be retroactively redeemed. Eligibility requires the cardholder account be in good standing.

6 Coverage protects the insured item for 90 days from the date of purchase against physical damage or theft. Annual limit of CAD $1,000 - overall lifetime maximum of $60,000 per cardholder account.

7 Benefit extends the original manufacturer’s warranty for a maximum of one additional year. Annual limit of CAD $25,000 - overall lifetime maximum of $60,000 per cardholder account

8 Balance Protection Insurance is optional and is provided by Trans Global Insurance Company and Trans Global Life Insurance Company. Premiums are 1.5% of the insured balance plus applicable taxes. Eligibility, benefits, limits and exclusions apply, including requirements that the account be in good standing. You may cancel your coverage at any time, but if you cancel within 30 days (60 days in Quebec) and no claim has been made, you will get a refund of premiums paid. 9 Foreign currency transactions will be converted to Canadian dollars using the Mastercard rate of exchange. You are charged a fee of 2.5% of the converted amount, on both credits and debits.
